AnchorMan vs Watchman for LAA closure

In the SAFE-PROTECT trial, Binhao Wang, Huimin Chu and colleagues randomised patients with atrial fibrillation at high risk of ischaemic stroke to left atrial appendage (LAA) closure with either the AnchorMan or Watchman 2.5 device. The 12-month clinical outcomes demonstrate the AnchorMan’s non-inferior clinical success and LAA closure rates. Philippe Garot and Jens Erik Nielsen-Kudsk help interpret these results in an accompanying editorial.

TAVI with intra-annular or supra-annular SEVs

In the HERA-TAVI registry, Matteo Casenghi, Emanuele Barbato and colleagues compare intra- vs supra-annular self-expanding valves (SEVs) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Despite similar 1-year clinical and haemodynamic outcomes, the differences in procedure-related endpoints suggest the importance of individualised device selection. This article is accompanied by an editorial from Daniel J. Blackman and Annette Maznyczka.

PPM after TAVI in PORTICO IDE

Using data from PORTICO IDE, Gregory P. Fontana, Raj Makkar and colleagues analyse the 30-day haemodynamic outcomes and rates of prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM) across three transcatheter aortic valve platforms implanted in patients with aortic stenosis and small or large aortic annuli. The intra-annular Portico SEV was compared against the supra-annular Evolut SEV and the balloon-expandable intra-annular SAPIEN 3, with the former two valves yielding similar haemodynamic and PPM results, regardless of the annular diameter.

Manveer Singh, Philippe Garot and colleagues present recent insights from three studies investigating the Valve Academic Research Consortium (VARC) high bleeding risk (HBR) criteriafor patients undergoing TAVI. Nahyr Sofia Lugo-Fagundo, Abdallah El Sabbagh and colleagues examine the feasibility and safety of percutaneous mechanical aspiration in left-sided infective endocarditis.
