EAPCI Focus on the EAPCI National Registries Supplement 2017
An interview with Emanuele Barbato, Chairman of the EAPCI National Cardiac Societies & International Affairs Committee and Dariusz Dudek, Chairman of the EAPCI Education & Training Committee
What is the rationale behind this EAPCI initiative?
In Europe, a large heterogeneity in data collection on interventional cardiology practice exists among countries. In most cases, the collection of data is not compulsory or linked to a reimbursement system and is either left to local sites or coordinated by the national working groups or societies. Quality control of the data collection is also scattered and very limited. This situation makes any effort to generate a common European framework for data reporting particularly challenging. This special EuroIntervention Supplement stems from the awareness of these challenges. It represents a first attempt to create a uniform system of data collection and reporting from different ESC working groups.
What will be the results of the Supplement?
The national reports will focus on interventional cardiology practice over the last five years. This endeavour will serve as a basis for an up-to-date snapshot of current trends in interventional cardiology practice among the participating countries. On the one hand, cross-referencing between countries will help improve the quality and accuracy of data collection by providing the authors with benchmark comparisons with their neighbouring countries. On the other hand, these reports will provide a snapshot “frozen in time” within each country of their past practices and will serve as a basic reference when we wish to compare current and future adoption of tools and techniques. More importantly, this special issue will represent a reliable source of data with which to monitor the adoption of guideline recommendations across Europe.
When will the Supplement be published?
The Supplement will be published in early 2017. At present, invitations have already been sent to the various Presidents of the 24 National Societies who previously expressed an interest in contributing to this endeavour. The submission deadline is 30 September 2016. We also encourage each country to involve its EAPCI Young National Ambassador (YNA). The reports will be peer reviewed and indexed on PubMed.
