EAPCI Focus on “Hot topics in Interventional Cardiology” at ESC 2016

This year’s European Society of Cardiology congress in Rome highlights 163 specific topics organised under nine main subject areas organised in themed villages.

The EAPCI has specifically organised Village 2, with the following subthemes: interventions / peripheral circulation / stroke / surgery.

The objectives of these Village 2 presentations are to combine the latest research with case presentations and interactive discussions to provide clear-cut, simple, take-home messages for the practising clinician – something that they can use right away in the daily care of their patients.

There will also be a focus on the Heart Team, with discussions on the expansion of the “Team” beyond interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to all related professionals, including general cardiologists, general practitioners and endocrinologists, etc.

Other topics of interest include: blood thinning following transaortic valve implantation (TAVI); bystander lesions in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI); managing multiple, multi-state diseases; balancing ischaemia management with bleeding risk and translating recommendations into individual care (the 2015 non-STEMI ESC clinical practice guidelines).

In addition, there will be a special session entitled: “Hot topics in Interventional Cardiology”. This will take place on the 30th of August from 14:00 to 15:30, “Helsinki” (Village 2) under the chairmanship of Marco Valgimigli (Bern, Switzerland) and Andreas Baumbach (Bristol, United Kingdom).

In the field of percutaneous valvular interventions, Stephan Windecker (Bern, Switzerland) will discuss whether TAVI will replace surgical aortic valve replacement and Michael Haude, President of the EAPCI (Neuss, Germany), will present transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement techniques. In the field of coronary interventions, Robert Byrne (Munich, Germany) will present a critical appraisal of the first-generation bioresorbable coronary scaffold devices. Felix Mahfoud (Homburg/Saar, Germany) will update the attendees on renal denervation for the treatment of arterial hypertension.
