EAPCI Focus on the Turkish Society of Cardiology Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (TAPCI-TSC)

An interview with the President, Erdogan Ilkay

What does the EAPCI membership mean for a national society?

Being a member of the EAPCI means taking an active role in evolving developments in interventional cardiology, including emerging treatment modalities. For the members of the Turkish Society of Cardiology Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (TAPCI-TSC), the EAPCI plays an important role in keeping us up to date on protocols and procedures in this era of evidence-based medical practice. In the future, I hope that the EAPCI will be more comprehensive, furthering its goals and influencing physicians worldwide through expanded support of training and innovative educational programmes for interventional fellows.

What are the current issues related to the national society?

In recent years, we have seen the Turkish Society of Cardiology selected as the leading healthcare organisation in our country. Many of the latest procedures are available here such as TAVI and MitraClip and also percutaneous closure of paravalvular leaks, all of which are performed by our experienced members with high success rates. The mission of the TAPCI-TSC is to ensure that these interventions continue to be performed at the highest level practised in Europe today.

The TAPCI-TSC participates in the Stent for Life initiativeresulting in a 3-4 fold increase in primary PCI since we joined. EuroPCR also plays a role in learning new treatment strategies and keeping abreast of developments in our field with many of our members attending each year.

We are a bridge between European and Asian physicians, both in our practice as well as being a crossroads between the different cultures.
