Focus on the EAPCI Journal Club An interview with Marco Toselli, EAPCI Online and Communication Committee member

How was the Journal Club developed?

The Journal Club began as a local initiative which the EAPCI Online and Communications Committee expanded into a broader academic and educational network, connecting peers and colleagues across Europe. The goal is to create a platform that actively engages early career interventional cardiologists. Through these efforts, we aim to strengthen ties within the academic community, promote knowledge exchange, and provide a supportive environment for the professional growth of early career interventional cardiologists.

What are the key goals of the EAPCI Journal Club?

The primary objectives of this initiative are to share knowledge and support early career interventional cardiologists, though all members of the EAPCI community are welcome. Our key goals are as follows:

– Disseminate cutting-edge research: ensure that participants are consistently updated on the latest and most impactful research within the realm of interventional cardiology.

– Enhance research and statistical proficiency: facilitate participants’ understanding of research methodologies and statistical techniques, contributing to a more robust foundation in these crucial areas.

– Sharpen presentation and summarisation skills: help participants to develop their ability to effectively summarise and present scientific research among their peers and to experts, fostering clearer communication and understanding.

– Engage with leading experts: provide opportunities for participants to interact with and learn from esteemed professionals in interventional cardiology.

How has the EAPCI Journal Club benefitted your career?

I’ve had the opportunity to work with an enthusiastic team of young interventionists. This experience has provided valuable networking opportunities and significantly enhanced my professional growth.

How are the topics for the EACPI Journal Club chosen, and how do you ensure the needs of the community are met?

The selection process for topics within the EAPCI Journal Club involves a committee that follows a set of guidelines to choose papers aligning with the goals and interests of the community:

– Prestigious scientific journals: the committee prioritises papers published in highly reputable and prestigious scientific journals.

– Clinical relevance: the committee considers the potential impact of selected papers on clinical activities within the field of interventional cardiology. Papers that address current challenges, emerging trends, or have direct implications for clinical practice are given priority.

– Diversity of topics: to meet the diverse interests of the community, the committee strives to alternate topics between the domains of coronary intervention, structural intervention, and pharmacology.

– Community input: the committee may seek input from the EAPCI community, such as through social media or feedback sessions, to understand the specific interests and needs of the members.

– Emerging research areas: the committee remains attentive to emerging research areas and trends within interventional cardiology.

How can EAPCI members become involved in the Journal Club?

EAPCI members can actively participate in the Journal Club through various modalities:

– Attend the EAPCI Journal Club meetings: Members are encouraged to attend the Journal Club’s live sessions regularly.

– Become a presenter: EAPCI members can contribute to the Journal Club by becoming presenters. Members have the opportunity to present their own research during dedicated sessions. This allows for the dissemination of their work among peers, fostering constructive discussions and feedback.

– Follow the Journal Club on social media: Remain up to date with the EAPCI Journal Club through social media platforms (@EAPCIPresident on X or LinkedIn).

– Become an EAPCI member: Taking out a subscription ensures that members can catch up on previous recorded sessions at their convenience (https://esc365.escardio.org)

What are you looking forward to with the new EAPCI membership?

Of course, I am enthusiastic about continuing to participate in the EAPCI Journal Club and also gaining access to additional resources as a member. This includes the opportunity to watch exclusive webinars on ESC 365, where one can acquire valuable insights and knowledge from experts in the field. Moreover, being an EAPCI member grants access to EuroIntervention online − a valuable resource for staying updated on the latest research in interventional cardiology.
